FINE-ART PRINTS

Mary’s interest in printmaking flows from her interest in paper and ink. She started using calligraphic pens at age 12 and made her first paper after reading Tim Barrett’s classic book on Japanese papermaking.

At Maine College of Art, a class on contemporary printmaking processes yoked these two interests, and the instructor’s emphasis on nontoxic and experimental techniques electrified Mary.

Today, Mary’s work is characterized by experimentation with unusual papers (such as spun olefin), new processes (such as photo-etching film laminated to Plexiglas) and innovative “found” materials (such as rubber bands and butter).
