FIRST LIGHT PAINTINGS
First Light is a series of greatly abstracted
landscape paintings by George Simonson in acrylic pastepaint
over oil pastel on paper.
These consist in the main of two color fields, arranged
to suggest a horizon perhaps, with the sky overhead and
ocean (or possibly land) below. They are emptier than most
landscapes—yet also fuller.
Meditations on space
George believes these paintings to be meditations on space.
They aim to show what the world looks like, and feels like
in our blood, when we are truly seeing, truly being, instead
squinting through a veil of habits.
In moments of ordinary awareness, space is of course empty,
matter is solid, and time passes. But in the gaps between
