ON THE WATERFRONT

Maine is long on waterfronts. And they've been photographed a lot.

But as a contemplative photographer, George Simonson tries to approach his subjects by dropping preconceived ideas, habitual thinking, and allegiance (or aversion) to precedent.

"It's like Zen archery," he explains. "Lots of history and ritual. But then in the actual moment, you make the shot. Pure and simple. And something happens—or it doesn't. A contemplative photo, then, is a portrait of the artist's mind at the instant the shutter clicked."
