ROLLING STEEL
Again and again, George Simonson finds himself drawn to
photographing antique cars and trucks.
"I don't know anything about them, the way technical
enthusiasts do," he says. "In fact, I often forget
to record the make, model and year. It's simply that my
eye is caught by curves and colors that you just don't see
anymore—which old cars are rich in. They wake you
up!"
He generally shoots details instead of portraits and seems
to be especially attracted to vehicles from the era of his
boyhood.
"Old cars look fresh again," he adds. "They're
mind-stopping, like travel to a foreign country. But I suspect
my favorites stir up unconscious associations and tenderness—I
can feel the camera tugging me—which doesn't bespeak
a stopped mind at all. So that's interesting to watch, too."
